CoDesignS ESD Toolkit Planner

A cloud-based planning tool that supports embedding ESD in curriculum design through co-design and co-creation.

An integrated Curriculum Mapping and Planning Tool

The CoDesignS ESD Curriculum Planner is a centralised curriculum mapping tool that enables structured planning and tracking of programmes, modules, and learning activities against key sustainability indicators — supporting academics to collaboratively design curricula and institutional stakeholders to assess alignment with sustainability and learning design frameworks.

We are pleased to announce the release of the new version of the CoDesignS ESD Curriculum/Toolkit Planner. This custom-built platform has been developed to bring together all CoDesignS programmes, tools, and dashboards into a single integrated environment, creating a more streamlined and user-friendly experience for educators, facilitators, and curriculum designers.

The new Curriculum Planner offers a significantly improved interface, making it easier to navigate, design, manage, and monitor Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) learning activities and curricula. Alongside enhanced usability, the platform introduces more robust user management features, enabling better collaboration, role allocation, and access control across teams and institutions.

Curriculum Mapping for Education for Sustainable Development

What is curriculum mapping for ESD?

Curriculum mapping for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is the process of systematically aligning a university's programmes, modules, and learning activities against sustainability frameworks — most notably the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and UNESCO key competencies for sustainability. It enables academic staff and institutional leaders to visualise where sustainability is already embedded in the curriculum and identify gaps where it could be strengthened.

How does the CoDesignS ESD Curriculum Planner support SDG curriculum mapping?

The CoDesignS ESD Curriculum Planner is a dedicated SDG curriculum mapping tool built for higher education institutions. It allows educators to co-design learning activities and map them to specific SDGs and ESD sustainability indicators in real time. The platform provides an institutional dashboard that aggregates data across all mapped programmes, giving leaders a clear picture of sustainability coverage across their institution.

Why is curriculum mapping important for universities?

As sustainability becomes a core expectation in higher education, universities need structured tools to evidence how sustainability is integrated across disciplines. Curriculum mapping provides an evidence base for accreditation, quality assurance, and strategic reporting, while also empowering academics to design more impactful, sustainability-focused learning experiences.

Which universities use the CoDesignS ESD Curriculum Planner?

The CoDesignS ESD framework and Curriculum Planner have been implemented by universities across the UK, UAE, China, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, and the Philippines — including Manchester Metropolitan University, De Montfort University, Nottingham Trent University, De La Salle University Philippines, Queen's University Belfast, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of Essex, American University of Sharjah, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, among others.
